One of Hollywood’s top comediennes, Chelsea Handler, hosted the 28th Critics’ Choice Awards in LA tonight where hundreds of television and film stars gathered to celebrate the best performances of the year. Though in true host fashion she had several hair and outfit swaps throughout the show, her red-carpet look—the orange asymmetrical dress and sky-high hair—stopped us in our tracks. That voluminous hair! Here’s how celebrity hairstylist Adir Abergel created the look.
“I wanted Chelsea’s red-carpet look to be a voluminous, sexy blonde bombshell style,” says Abergel, who gave the host a bouncy blowout with a deep side-part using products from Virtue (Abergel is the brand’s creative director). Before styling, he washed and conditioned Handler’s hair with Flourish Shampoo & Conditioner for Thinning Hair. Formulated with the brand’s signature Alpha Keratin 60ku CLINICAL (alpha and gamma keratin proteins that strengthen the hair), the duo creates the perfect foundation for healthier-looking hair. Then he used lightweight Volumizing Primer spray (Anne Hathaway is also a fan of this product) all over her semi-wet roots to prep her hair.
“To add more memory prior to blow-drying, I added Volumizing Mousse ($38) to to the roots and mid lengths,” Abergel explains, “and then applied Healing Oil for moisture on the ends. Next, I blow-dried sections of her hair with a round brush to give it volume, movement and the classic blowout shape.” He set each section in a pin-curl shape using a crease-less clip until the hair was completely cooled down. Then he removed the clips and curled Handler’s hair with a large T3 curling iron “to pull the look into a sexy realm.” To finish the look, he sprayed it with 6-in-1 Style Guard Hairspray, which gave the hair enough hold to survive the rainy weather, but also still look light and touchable.
