While much of volume II of Netflix’s docuseries Harry & Meghan explores what led Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to step back as senior working royal family members and the royal family’s negative reaction to it, one celebrity moment made the final episode—and speaks volumes about those who supported Meghan and Harry in their early days as post-royals.
In the final episode, Meghan was filmed receiving a text from Beyoncé(!) after the couple’s tell-all Oprah interview aired in March 2021. Yes, they have each other’s numbers.
Meghan and Harry were being filmed in their Montecito, California, home’s joint office. Meghan received the message and said aloud, “Beyonce just texted,” per Variety.
Harry mock-gasped and quipped, “Shut up!”
“[She’s] just checking in. I still can’t believe she knows who I am,” Meghan continued before paraphrasing Bey’s text to her: “She said she wants me to feel safe and protected. She admits and respects my bravery and vulnerability and thinks I was selected to break generational curses that need to be healed.”
“That’s well said,” Harry said.
Meghan Markle meeting Beyoncé in July 2019.
Beyoncé met Meghan and Harry in 2019 at The Lion King‘s London premiere. Meghan is of course a big fan of Bey. Finding Freedom co-author and royal reporter Carolyn Durand reported for ELLE.com then that Meghan “was understood to be ‘nervous’ ahead of her appearance meeting Beyoncé at the premiere. Beyoncé later commented about the meeting with Harry and Meghan, ‘They are so sweet.’”
