Magnolia Bakery may have made that famous appearance in Sex and the City some 20-odd years ago, but that doesn’t mean the West Village hot spot’s popularity has waned. As of today, the iconic bakery is taking on their own version of “wellness” with a candle that pays homage to its unapologetically decadent banana pudding.
The collaboration—in conjunction with candle company Boy Smells—stems from cofounder Matthew Herman’s “decades-long obsession” with the infamous Magnolia Bakery pudding. “Banana Pudding has always and will forever be my ride or die indulgence,” he says. “When living in New York and later in LA, whenever coworkers, friends, or lovers asked what kind of cake I wanted for my birthday, I would always say no cake, just a giant banana pudding, please.”
The fragrance is rather unexpected. There are creamy classic banana notes with vanilla, but it doesn’t give off scratch-and-sniff fruity vibes. It would be best to describe the scent as “gourmand,” with guaiac, leather, cardamom spice and elemi resin making it a bit warmer and smoky.
In addition to being available online and in several retail spaces, The Boy Smells x Magnolia Bakery Banana Pudding candle ($48) will be available at Magnolia Bakery’s original location in the West Village and Magnolia Bakery West Hollywood on Saturday, June 17.
