It’s safe to say that summer is the season for blush trends. Year after year, the beauty set never fails to deliver a vibrant new way to wear rouge. Whether you like a lightly dusted look or prefer an all-over flush, there’s truly something for everyone. At this point, we’re knee-deep in blush looks, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still embrace the latest blonzing trend. As the culmination of two of summer’s most beloved products, blush and bronzer, blonzing is taking social media feeds by storm. Sure, the catchy name has viral appeal, but there’s more to this makeup trend than meets the eye. Ahead, celebrity makeup artists spill the secrets to what makes the look unique and how to do it at home.

What is blonzing?

The mashup name alludes to what this trend is all about. “Blonzing is a type of makeup technique that combines blush and bronzer to create a sun-kissed look,” says celebrity makeup artist and founder of JamieMakeup Jamie Greenberg. It uses earth-toned shades to add warmth to the face and relies heavily on a soft neutral color palette. “The technique is basically a two-in-one method that involves using blush and bronzer together,” says celebrity makeup artist Tobi Henney.

What makes blonzing unique?

Unlike the boyfriend blush trend, blonzing is meant to give you a tan and bronzy flush. “The idea is to create a tanned effect instead of a rosy look,” says Henny. She continues by saying that with this technique, you want to target the areas of your face where the sun would naturally hit. “Your cheeks and temples are the ideal areas that will create a warm, glowing look,” she says.

How to get the look

You don’t have to be a pro to nail this trend. Since the focus is on creating a bronzed flush, you have some room to play around. However, you don’t want the final look to appear blotchy, which can often happen with bronzer. “Blonzing is all about blending the edges and diffusing any harsh lines,” says Henney. To ensure that you’re getting a smooth look, she recommends using a mix of applicators, including a contour and fluffy brush as well as a makeup sponge.

Placement is also a key factor in the blonzing trend. Think of how you would place your bronzer, and use that as a starting point. “Start by placing the product on your cheeks and then work your way up toward your temples,” says Greenberg. She emphasizes that you don’t want to apply the product too high on the cheekbones because that will give more of a contoured look. Once you’ve applied the product, she recommends blending using sweeping circular motions for a natural look.
